“HAVE YOU EVER…”?

“Have you ever thought how challenging it could be choosing the right high school”?

Have you ever thought how challenging it could be choosing the right high school?  Remember that schools should be happy places because you will succeed better in a happy environment.  High School is a crucial time for you to grow personally and intellectually.

Here are some tips for choosing the high school that could be right for you.

–  Remember what’s important to you.

What are your family values, your beliefs, your culture?  Find the school that you feel fits best.  Choose a high school that allows you to get out of your comfort zone!  Be willing to get involved and say YES to challenges.

–  Don’t forget the teachers.

Teachers are to schools what engines are to cars.  Teachers with a passion for learning possess the ability to foster a natural curiosity within their students.

–  You are the company you keep.

Friends and friendships are important, and positive relationships are an important part of the journey to adulthood.  A few questions to ask yourselves when considering different high schools are:

Will these friends help me make positive decisions?

Will these friends help open doors for me and my future?

–  Look for a school that is progressive

As schools embrace the availability and convenience of technology, many high schools are implementing online courses so they can cater to their students.  Of course online courses must still address the unique social, educational, and emotional needs you may have.  Make sure they are able to do that.

–  Practice leadership

The development of leadership will help you analize your strengths and weaknesses. This will allow you to set important goals and to gain the confidence and motivation to carry out those goals.

–  Use your brain!

Choose a school that will challenge you to travel, try out for a play or team, represent your peers in student government or tutor other students.

Choosing the right high school is often a difficult task.  Taking part in open houses (even if it is a virtual event) will ensure you have the best chance to find out which school is the best fit to be your school.  There are practical factors that come into play, as well.  Finding a school nearby, or one that offers transportation, may be a must, but don’t limit yourself to what is easier, but do what will be best for your future.

“I hope to create a space for other stories and other voices.  For every door that has been opened to me, I hope to open a door to others.  Let’s invite one another in”.
